Let’s Talk: How to Actually Create Buzz for Your CPG Brand (Without Burning Your Wallet)

Updated: Feb 10

cpg buzz

Alright, founder to founder—let’s be honest:Everyone says, “Just send out some free product, get people posting, and boom, buzz!”But if you’re the one footing the bill, you know nothing is free. Those “samples” add up quick—and suddenly your “promo” budget is gone and you’re wondering if it was worth it.

Here’s the real way to create buzz when you don’t have deep pockets, and (more important!) how to keep track so you’re not just throwing cash into the wind.

1. What Does “Buzz” Even Mean for You?

First, get super clear. Is it getting 10 people to post you on stories? A couple of honest reviews?A bit of press? Or just some folks finally talking about your brand outside your family group chat?Pick a number. If you can measure it, you can actually win at it.

2. Who Do You Really Want Talking About You?

You don’t need 100 random influencers.Find 10-20 people who fit your brand and would actually care, micro-influencers, foodie friends, local community peeps, even cool folks from founder groups.Quality > quantity, always.

3. Let’s Get Real About What This Costs

Here’s the part everyone ignores:Every “free” product you send out costs you real money.

Let’s break it down together:

  • Product: Actual cost to make each unit (ingredients, packaging, labor, the whole thing).

  • Shipping: That little trip to the post office adds up. Don’t forget tracking or extra packaging.

  • Extras: Handwritten note? Tissue paper? A little sticker? Add it in.

So, say each box is $2.50, shipping is $6, extras are $1.Total: $9.50 per sample.Send out 15? That’s $142.50.And if you’re tight on cash, trust me, you’ll feel every dollar.

4. Reach Out Like a Human (Not a Robot)

Slide into their DMs, but make it personal! “Hey [Name], love what you’re doing with [their thing]. I’m launching [your thing], can I send you some to try? If you dig it, a shoutout or some honest feedback would make my month.”

5. Make Your Journey the Content

Film yourself packing those boxes. Post when you’re at the post office (“Is it just me or is this my second home now?”).Show the reality, not just the shiny parts.People love seeing the hustle and the behind-the-scenes.

6. Track Everything (Even If It’s Just a Notes App)

Jot down:

  • Who you sent product to

  • Did they post? Did they like it?

  • Did you get any new followers, reviews, or orders because of it?

You’ll spot your real champions fast, and know who’s worth keeping in the loop for round two.

7. Hack It for Next Time

Short on cash? Send fewer, but better. Ship together if your contacts know each other.Partner with another startup founder and do a collab send-out.Or, just give them a killer discount code to try your stuff instead.
